For this test, the doctor inserts a narrow, flexible tube into the anus and rectum. Once the tube is in place, a small balloon at the tip of the tube may be expanded and the patient is asked to squeeze and relax the anus. This test examines how tight the anal sphincter is and to what degree it predisposes to constipation or fecal incontinence. It also measures the sensitivity and function of the rectum (compliance).
The test is performed without sedation and lasts 15 minutes.
